3 Lessons from Running a 30 Mile Trail Race

3 Lessons from Running a 30 Mile Trail Race

Shortly after meeting the man who is now my husband, we quickly bonded over evening gym time and weekend races. In January, he reported to me that he registered for the Spartan Ultra Beast race in Lake Tahoe in October—this is a trail run that is over 26 miles long and at least 60 obstacles. At the time, running this race seemed impossible and like a waste of money. Racers who do not pass the cut-off point within the limited time are removed from the course. Imagine running 16 miles and being forced to quit!

Over the next 10 months, I timidly attempted the various courses of Spartan races. While these races were difficult and challenging, they never were out of reach of my abilities. Week after week, my exercise partner and I attended fitness classes at the gym, beach runs in the sand, and obstacle course races through the woods. By race weekend in October, we stood at the starting line with appropriate shoes, clothes, gear, and fuel.

The race was the most difficult experience in my life so far and I wanted to quit many times. However, running next to me was a loyal partner full of encouragements and within me were years of experience as an athlete pushing past the uncomfortable point of pain.

My three lessons from this experience are:

  1. Never underestimate the power of a partner
  2. Repeat positive thoughts–especially when you’re feeling down, and
  3. Live boldly– because you CAN do it!
