5 Steps to Creating your Ideal Routine

A personalized routine is quite powerful in helping you achieve success in life. This “R”-word has never sounded pretty to me. Having a routine meant being tied down to a boring life and left no room for adventure and spontaneity. But I think once we take control of our own routine, the positive aspects of life fall into place.

A routine it is most often associated with mundane tasks in life that rule a person into a powerless follower of society. The routine person is stuck in thick traffic daily and attends a job that gives him little joy.

How can a routine be seen as positive? By taking control of the tasks and cycles of time.

How can you take control of your routine? Sketch out your ideal day or week. Even if there is variety in your schedule, there is still a pattern to the variety. Imagine how the day/week would be if you were in control of time. First start with all of the important activities of the day.

Here is an example of ideal life: “I’d like to wake up with the sunrise, eat a homemade breakfast, pack my lunch, travel to work while listening to great music, come home from work with time to spend with my family, exercise, and enjoy a delicious meal”.

Here is an example of current life: “I wake up late after snoozing the alarm ten times, rush out the door with an apple and snack bar, drive to work cursing at all of the bad traffic, spend the evening with my family watching TV, and fall asleep on the couch.”

Which example seems to be enjoying his routine more? Your ideal routine may seem Utopian; however, it is possible to achieve given awareness of your vision and action towards achieving your vision.

5 STEPS TO CREATING YOUR IDEAL ROUTINE:

  1. Sketch out your ideal day or week. Start with your main priorities then go into detailed descriptions. Write this down.
  2. Visualize the ideal day/week playing out. See this as your current reality.
  3. Make note of the modifications necessary to craft your routine.
  4. Take small actions every day to shape your routine into your control.
  5. Give yourself permission to modify your routine once it stops serving you in a positive way.

A cynical person will read the above and shout out excuses for why their ideal day is not possible. I’d like to first ask you: Have you taken the time to sketch out your ideal day? Are you balancing between realistic and goal-setting? Have you made honest attempts at taking control of your time and organizing your time to better serve you? After you’ve given a fair, honest attempt at crafting your day to better serve you… then we can talk!
